Jaya Parvati Vrat - Vratam

About Jaya Parvati Vratam:
Jaya Parvati Vrat, mainly observed in Gujarat, is an important fasting period dedicated to Goddess Jaya, a form of Goddess Parvati. Both the married women and unmarried girls observe Jayaparvati vrat. Married women observe it for marital bliss, well-being and long life of their husband while the unmarried girls observe it to get good husband.

Jaya Parvati Vrat is observed for 5 days in the Ashadha month, which begins on the Shukla Paksha Trayodashi and ends on Krishna Paksha Tritiya. Jayaparvati fasting is recommended to perform for five, seven, nine, eleven or up to twenty continuous years.

Jaya Parvati Vrat Procedure:
There are some specific guidelines to be followed while observing Jaya Parvati Vrat. Devotees should refrain from eating salted food. They should completely avoid salt during the five days fasting period. Some people even avoid cereals and vegetables also during the five days fasting period.

On the first day of the fasting period, wheat seeds known as Javara are sown in a small pot and kept on Puja stand, and worshipped for five days. During Puja, a necklace made of cotton wool known as Nagla, is adorned with Kumkum (vermilion).

This ritual is continued for five days fasting period. Every morning the wheat seeds are watered.

The last day of fasting day falls on the previous day of Gauri Tritiya Puja, when the fasting is broken after morning Puja. Women keep awake whole night doing meditation and chanting of religious Bhajan and Aartis. This ritual of singing night-long religious hymns is known as Jayaparvati Jagran.

Next day morning, the grown wheat grass is taken out of the pot and immersed in nearby water body like river or pond. Puja is performed in the morning and the fast is broken by eating a full meal consisting salt, vegetables and bread made of wheat.
