Balayalam is a temporary miniature structure which was constructed during the repair of the temple and Kumbhabhishekam ceremony in a Temple. The divine presence of the main deity in temple was transferred from the murti worshipped to a Kalasha. This Kalasha is place at the top of the Balalayam. In Sanskrit ‘Baala’ means mini and ‘Aalaya’ means Temple.

During the Jeernodharana (renovation period) of a temple, all the divine Murtis were shifted to the holy waters contained in the Kalasham. Pooja will be done to the Kalashas and Ustava deities.

The Kalashas will stay in a miniature form often known as Balalayam. During this course of the devotees can’t see or perform pooja to the moola vigraham or murtis worshipped in a temple. The scheduled poojas might be performed solely to Utsava deities.

The divine presence of the temple deity will stay within the Kalashas atop Balalayam till it’s transferred again to the Moola vigrahas or the primary murti. Scheduled Poojas to Moola vigrahas will begin solely on the Mahakumbhabhishekam day.
