Chaitra Shukla Panchami is known as Kalpadi Tithi. According to Vedic division of time, this day refers to the beginning of a Kalpa. Hindu Panchanga says that there are seven Kalpadi days in a year, which include Gudi Padwa or Ugadi and Akshaya Tritiya days.
Kalpadi day is popularly known as Lakshmi Panchami. Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, and this day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. Shri is another name of Goddess Lakshmi and hence Lakshmi Panchami is also known as Shri Panchami and Shri Vrata. Lakshmi Panchami should not be confused with Vasant Panchami, which has also the name Shri Panchami. Vasant Panchami is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of art and knowledge.
Lakshmi Panchami day falls in the first week of Hindu New Year. Goddess Lakshmi worship at the beginning of the year is considered to be very auspicious. On this day people observe a full day fast and worship Goddess Lakshmi at home and even in office. Elaborate Puja is performed on this day in some commercial establishments.

How to worship Goddess Lakshmi on Lakshmi Panchmi :
Wake up before the sunrise and take bath.
Offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi by chanting Goddess Lakshmi’s mantras to bigin the fasting.
Clean the idol of Goddess Lakshmi with Panchamrit (honey, sugar, milk, yogurt and ghee) and place it on a clean platform.
Sandalwood, banana leaves, garland of flowers, rice, durva, red thread, supari, coconut and other things are used to worship Goddess Lakshmi devi.
After the pooja offer food and some money as Dakshina to Brahmanas.
Who ever following fast on this day is blessed with wealth and prosperity.
Who ever following Lakshmi Panchmi fast should not consume regular food like rice, roti during this fast , they can take fresh fruits, vegetables, milk and sweets.
Rituals and customs to follow on Lakshmi Panchami:
The puja and fasting (Vrat) is followed by both men and women.
Married couples should perform the Pooja together
Before the pooja clean your house neatly.
Those who observe Margashirsh Lakshmi pooja should invite 7 married womens and 7 young girls on the first day of the puja. Offer them some fruits, haldi kumkum and a book containing Mahalakshmi Vrat Story,
