About ISKCON Kolkata:

After establishing many temples around the world, Srila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada returned to India in August 1970. He created the first ISKCON center in India at Calcutta on 3C Albert Road, Kolkata – 700017. came to Calcutta with his foreign disciples. West head shaved, Sikhas, Tilak Vaishnava, saffron robes, playing mrdangas and karatalas, singing Hare Krishna, citing Sanskrit verse, created a sensation in eloquent Calcutta. Hundreds of people would gather to watch these Western devotees. Sankirtan has been played in places like Dalhousie Square, Chowringee and other different places.

Srila Prabhupada developed the “Membership of life” program in Kolkata. The lifetime membership rate was Rs. 1,111 and members are entitled to several benefits, including copies of Srila Prabhupada’s books and free accommodation at ISKCON centers around the world.

The first deity in India was set up in Calcutta and worship in this temple began in May 1971. SS Tamala Krishna Goswami, one of Srila Prabhupada’s most beloved disciples, was the second president of ISKCON Kolkata. The first ISKCON Rath Yatra in India was held in Calcutta on July 12, 1972. The Rath Yatra procession began at 3C Albert Road and resulted in Mallick’s Thakurbari at 12 M.G. The Road. Hundreds of thousands of people participated in this wonderful event.

Whenever I was in Calcutta, Srila Prabhupada resided at 3C Albert Road. He used to stay in a small room next to the temple hall. A dictating machine, a small typewriter, the Srimad Bhagavatam and an image of his beloved spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, were still there in his room. He met his guests in this room and gave many instructions to his disciples from here. He made many important decisions in Calcutta, including the purchase of the Mayapur land for Rs 14,500. His belongings are still kept in the room where he stayed.
