Buddha statue is the world’s single-stone largest statue which is located in Hussain sagar lake with placid water. It is very near from Lumbini Park. It is 0.5 kms far distance and from Nampally railway station it takes 3.5 kms distance. The buddha statue is 72 feet height including base and 450 tons of weight. Buddha statue has been placed on the rock of gibraltar in Hussian Sagar. This is one of the attractions to Hyderabad city. This is built by the interest of Chief Minister NT Rama Rao in the period of (1983-89) during his visit to New York he saw the statue of liberty and inspired to build the Gautama Buddha in the famous Hussain sagar Lake.
It is built as a part of Budddha poornima project in 1985. This monolithic statue was build out of a white granite rock. It was carved by 200 sculptors for two years .After 5 years the expenditure goes to $3 million; the statue stood at 58 feet and weighed 35 tons making it the world’s tallest monolithic statue of the Buddha. A concrete platform of 14 feet wide known as rock of gibraltar is constructed for the purposes of erecting the statue in the middle of hussian sagar lake. In 1990 there is an attempt of installing the Buddha statue on this rock. But the statue accidentally fell into the lake and several attempts were made to bring the statue to the surface.
After two years of deep search the statue was found and it was successfully installed in the year 1992.Again in the year 2006 famous Buddha Guru dalailama performed a great ritual and consecrated the statue.
At the side of it there were plantations of Bonsai trees and a park with musical lights known as Lumbini Park is constructed. A boat ride from Lumbini Park to Buddha temple is a memorable ride on hussian sagar lake. You can visit this place in the evening time to enjoy the laser show and the lighting’s around the lake.
