Sree Maha Mariamman Temple History:

The historical background of Sree Maha Mariamman Temple traces back to 84 years. It began in a humble manner in Sembawang Estate 12th mile, ahead of the Japanese Occupation, when a statue made of timber was being worshipped by some Hindu estate workers. Later, some senior estate workers made a cement statue of Sree Maha Mariamman and placed it in a small shrine within a rubber estate. The Temple then became a place of attraction for the Hindu devotees in the Sembawang Rubber Estate area.

When the Japanese occupied Singapore during 1941-45, the temple at the 12th mile was not managed properly due to reasons like a shortage of funds. Hence, it was shifted to the 7th mile of Sembawang, which is now popularly known as Sembawang Hills Estate, and had large Hindu inhabitants.

However, the support further reduced as several regular devotees of the Temple shifted to other parts of the island to be nearer to their new workplace.

In 1947, the idol of Sree Maha Mariamman was reinstalled and consecrated at another site at Nee Soon in Mandai Road.
There were two more consecration ceremonies during the period between 1950 and 1960. In the first occasion, the cement statues were replaced with granite statues, specially ordered and made in South India. In addition to Sree Maha Mariamman, the statues of Sree Sivan, Sree Krishnar, Sree Vinayagar and Sree Murugan were also installed. The subsequent consecration ceremony was done after the Temple was retrieved from a tumbledown state.

In 1965, the Temple was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies. A major renovation was carried out in 1971 and in connection with it, another consecration ceremony was performed. This time a “Kalasam”(vessel) was installed at the rooftop of Sree Maha Mariamman’s sanctum. Idols of Sree Nagar and Sree Saneeswarar made of granite were also installed during this period. In 1991, Navagrahams were installed and a Maha Kumbabishegam was performed.

In 1993, when Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) acquired the site for redevelopment purposes, the Temple Management purchased 2000 sqm of land at 251 Yishun Avenue 3, from the Housing & Development Board on a 30-year lease at a cost price of about $ 500,000.

Subsequently, the Management Committee led by Mrs Kalyani Ramaswamy, raised necessary funds to construct a new and permanent abode for Goddess Sree Maha Mariamman and other deities.

Rising as the Pink Temple of Singapore:

The Temple was relocated to 251, Yishun Avenue 3, beyond the vicinities of Mandai, on 6th September 1996. Its groundbreaking ceremony was inaugurated by Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, the then Senior Parliamentary Secretary to Home Affairs and Law Ministries, on 10th July 1994.

Mr Goh Chok Tong, the then Prime Minister graced the occasion to initiate the Ornamental and Sculptural Works in December 1996.

Consecration of the Temple was performed on the auspicious day of 18 May 1997, when several thousands of devotees and supporters joined Mr. Lim Boon Heng, the then Secretary General of NTUC and Minister-Without-Portfolio to witness the ceremony.

Exponential Growth:

The Temple transformed the present location into an important religious centre. It encouraged closer relationships amongst multi-religious and multi-racial organizations, helped and promoted greater social integration amongst newcomers and locals and played an important community role in organizing and participating in various community events.

The Temple is an active partner with several community clubs and charitable organizations engaging citizens in promoting inter faith and cultural understanding.

Envisioning Our Golden Future with Sree Maha Mariamman:

On its long way, the Sree Maha Mariamman Temple has established itself as an essential component of both the Hindu community and Singapore at large. The recently concluded Grand Consecration Ceremony on 18th April 2010 was extremely successful. Our vision is to continue the outstanding cultural exchange programs with the various grass-root organisations, community clubs, resident committees, charitable societies and religious centers. We intend to establish a library dedicated to the research on Hindu Scriptures, an orphanage for the less fortunate humans and a spiritual sanctuary for our elderly devotees.
