According to Bhagavad Gita lord Krishna said that I am Anantha among the serpents. Anantha or Adisesha is an infinite serpent who is divine and has an endless coils and floating on the water of the creation on which the Para Brahma sits.
Anantha also represents the eternal materiality or a primal energy that is infinite and called as the Mula Prakriti. And even in the reality snakes are considered as the symbol of alertness. They also signify the raise of awareness in the world through meditation. They also represent the flow of energy that is raising and flowing and the same is altered and also restfulness. They are representing the eternity and the materiality and also life as well as death.

So when the divine lord is riding on the seven hooded serpent the mighty Pedda Sesha Vahanam the lord is sending a message to all his devotees they are symbolizing the life and creation and preservation and also the destruction which are three phases that are important.
