Assam, which was earlier known as Kamarupa and the ancient River Bahmaputra flows through it. On its banks there are many ancient temples of Lord Shiva. Guwahati, which was called Pragjyotishapuram, and Tezpur, which were called Sonitapuram and Sibsagar, have a dense population of Shiva temples. The great devotee of Lord Shiva – Banasura, reigned from Sonitapura. Assam is a great place of pilgrimage to visit.
Assam is derived from the word asama, meaning “peerless” in the now extinct Ahom language. The neighboring states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Meghalaya were once part of Assam. Assam is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to the north, Nagaland and Manipur to the east, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh to the south, and West Bengal to the west via the Siliguri Corridor.
