Rameswaram Temple History, Hours

Sri Ramanatha Swami Temple or Rameswaram Temple is a very famous and Ancient Shiva temple in Tamilnadu, India. This temple is on a small island and is connected by a bridge called Pamban Bridge. This Rameswaram Temple is one of the 12 jyotirlingas in India. The presiding deity, the Lingam of Ramanathaswamy (Shiva), and is believed to have been established and worshiped by Rama, an avatar of the god Vishnu, to absolve the sins created during the Ramayana war in Sri Lanka.

There are 22 Theerthams (well) inside the temple, Bathing in these Tīrthas is an important aspect of the pilgrimage to Rameswaram and is considered equivalent to penance.

Temple History:

Long ago, Sri Rama wanted to apologize for defeating Ravana, who was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. He felt sad about this as Ravana was a Brahmin. So, he decided to worship Lord Shiva. Since there were no temples on the island, he sent Sri Hanuman to bring a special stone called a Shivlinga from Mount Kailash. But Hanuman took a while to return. In the meantime, Sita Devi made a shrine for Lord Shiva using sand from the nearby coast.

When Hanuman finally came back from the Himalayas with the Shivlinga, it was also set up next to the shrine made by Sita. So, there are two Shivlingas in the temple. One was made by Sita and is called the Ramalingam, and the other was brought by Hanuman from Mount Kailash and is called the Vishwalingam.

In the 15th century, King Udaiyan Sethupati and Nagoor Vaishyas built the temple. Later, in the 16th century, Tirumalaya Sethupathi divided the southern part of the temple. You can see statues of Tirumalaya and his son at the entrance of the temple. The design of the present Rameshwaram Temple was created in the 17th century. Scholars believe that King Kizhavan Sethupathi was responsible for its construction. The King of the Sethupathi Kingdom in Jaffna also contributed a lot to building the temple.
