About Sri Thendayuthapani Temple:
Sri Thendayuthapani Temple, popularly known as Chettiars’ Temple, is regarded as one of the oldest temples in Singapore. It was built in 1859 A.D. by Nattukkottai Chettiars. Sri Thendayuthapani Temple is managed by Chettiars’ Temple Society, which also manages Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple at China Town.
Sri Thendayuthapani Temple stretched over a spacious area, is situated in a picturesque location with wonderful surroundings and is listed in Singapore Tourism Board as a popular tourist destination. Lord Sri Thendayuthapani, also called Murugan is the main deity of this temple. Balasubrahmanyan, Arumugan, Shanmukhan, Palaniandavar, Swaminathan, Vallimanalan, Saravanan, Sevar Kodiyon, etc., are some of the names of Lord Thendayuthapani.
Idols of Lord Jambu Vinayagar and Idumban have been installed on the right and the left side at the entrance of the main sanctum. In the year 1878, two separate sanctums were built for Lord Sundareswarar and Meenakshi Amman, who were revered as the incarnations of Lord Shiva and Goddess Sakthi.
Other important deities and the Navagrahas were installed later.
A beautifully decorated “Alangara Mandapam” in the Temple is used to place the procession deity on auspicious days. Pandarams perform poojas for the deities in Sri Thendayuthapani Sanctum. Poojas for deities in other sanctums are performed by Sivacharyas (Brahmins).
A 75 feet tall Rajagopuram was completed in 1983 as a major breakthrough of all Hindu Temples in Singapore. It was consecrated on 24th November 1983. During reconstruction, modern amenities, including a marriage hall with dining facility, were added to the temple.
Again, in 1996, renovation and repainting were done, followed by a consecration ceremony on 29th November 1996.
After 13 years, another renovation process was done and the consecration function was held on 27th of November 2009.
Presently, the temple is equipped with separate staff quarters, a library, an office room and a spacious and well-decorated stage for cultural programs during special occasions.
Major festivals celebrated in this temple with great passion and splendor include Thai Pusam, Navarathri, Letcha Archanai for Meenakshi Amman and Durgai Amman, Skantha Shashti and Thiru Karthigai.
During the auspicious occasion of Guru Poojai and Karthigai every month, Annadhanam is conducted, serving delicious varieties of dishes to the devotees in the afternoon after the prayer.
