The B.M. Birla Planetarium had been inaugurated by Shri N.T.Rama Rao, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Presently Telangana on the 8th day in September in 1985. The planetarium had been the first phase of developing the Science Centre. The planetarium through the various presentations and movies shown there describes many aspects of the Galaxy, the Black holes, the Halley’s comets and many more of such cosmic mysteries. It can be said to be a blend of entertainment and learning. The planetarium provides a virtual tour of the stars and the solar system. The shows are presented on a daily basis in three languages i.e. English, Hindi and Telugu. It is one of the best attended planetarium. The technology used in the planetarium is more advanced in comparison to that of Europe, The US and countries in Far East. It has earned its name in being one of the finest and technically advanced science planetarium.
The dome shaped Birla Planetarium is a wing of the B.M. Birla Science Centre, Hyderabad. It is the answer to the curious enquiries of many amateur researchers in the fields of astronomy. The planetarium presents the proper environment to the new researchers and scholars who study the stars and the solar system.
The planetarium is located on the Naubat Pahad and is adjacent to the famous Birla Temple. The Birla group has two more planetariums to their credit, one in Kolkata and the other in Chennai.
This planetarium presents daily sky shows about the various mysteries of the Universe i.e. Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO’s), eclipses, meteors, comets, clash of Titans. The shows are so nicely put up that the spectators have a mesmerising and thrilling journey to the outer space that gives a feeling of being in a different universe altogether bringing excitement and exhilaration. The convincing background music adds to the excitement. The shows thus put up are quite contemporary. The latest such show is the 35 mins show – Mangalyaan to Mars.
The museum had been added to the Birla Science Centre in the second phase. In addition to regular museum, the science center has the art gallery as well. In the year 2000, the planetarium has been expanded with addition of new Dinosorium wing. The Dinosoriumk Wing houses the fossils of 160 million years old ‘Kotasaurus Yamanpalliensis’ along with marine shells, dinosaur eggs and tree trunks of that period. Most of these were presented by The Geological Survey of India after their excavation in Adilabad district which is about 300 kms away from the main city of Hyderabad.
Open to the public from 10.30 am to 3.00 pm, the planetarium is open on all days except the last Thursdays of the month. It is undoubtedly one of most sought after destination of the city and tops in the list of every visitor.
