About Krishna House:
The Krishna House in Gainesville was founded in 1971 by a young student couple who had turned their apartment into a peaceful place where students could practice bhakti yoga. In 1989, the Krishna house was moved to current location at 214 NW 14th St. Today, the center houses the Bhakti Academy, an educational program designed to provide total immersion experiences for students interested in practicing bhakti yoga in a temple.
Students of the Bhakti Academy live in the temple ashram for one or two semesters, studying ancient Vedic scriptures, including Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-bhagavatam, which provide basic teachings on the philosophy of bhakti yoga. In addition to philosophy, other aspects of bhakti yoga are taught, including mantra meditation, vegetarian cooking, devotional music, and Sanskrit.
In exchange for tuition and accommodation, Bhakti Academy students serve the Krishna lunch on campus, hold community education classes, assist with temple programs, and help maintain temple / ashram facilities. Students also have the opportunity to learn community living techniques, organic gardening techniques, composting systems, restaurant / kitchen management skills and vegan cooking.
