This temple was established by Adi Shankara Acharya at Ameda near Chotanikara temple at Ernakulam and is a suitable place to perform poojas like Naga Dosha Pooja (Kaala Sarpa Dosha), Rahu Ketu Pooja.
This temple is elegantly situated 20 km south of Ernakulam, on the banks of the Vembanad Lake in Tripunithura-Vaikom road.
The Sapta Matrikas (Seven Divine Mothers) or the seven celestial mothers signifying the saktis or the energies or the important goddesses are Brahmani (Saraswati), Mahesvari (Raudrani), Kaumari (Karttikeyani), Vaishnavi (Lakshmi), Varahi, Indrani and Chamunda (Chamundi). The sinful influences of the mortals are said to be destroyed by these powerful mothers and are considered alike the Navagrahas. Some Puranas show a reference to them as Ashta Matrikas or Eight Divine Mothers.
