Somnath Temple Faq
The Shree Somnath temple stands proudly at the shoreline of the Arabian Ocean in the western corner of Gujarat State, India.
The Shree Somnath temple holds immense historical significance and is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites. Its references can be found in ancient texts such as Skandpuran, Shreemad Bhagavat, and Shivpuran.
The Rig-Veda hymn mentions Bhagvan Somnath along with other sacred pilgrimage sites like Gangaji, Yamunaji, and Eastward Saraswati, highlighting the ancient value of Shree Somnath as a Tirthdham.
According to the Shiva Purana and Nandi Upapurana, Shiva declared that he manifests in twelve divine forms and sacred places known as the Jyotirlingas. Shree Somnath is one of these revered twelve Jyotirlingas.
The Somnath temple is believed to have been built in four phases. Sri Soma adorned it with gold, Ravi with silver, Sri Krishna with wood, and King Bhimadeva with stone, representing different periods and contributors in its construction.
Despite facing six desecrations by Muslim invaders, the Somnath temple has stood resilient, symbolizing the reconstructive spirit and cultural unity of Indian society.
A person who has faith in Hinduism can offer his/her prayer.
