About ISKCON Salem:
Located two hundred kilometers southeast of Bangalore, Salem is home to a very enthusiastic group of ISKCON devotees, mostly young Brahmacharis, who have recently moved to a new three-acre property just half a kilometer away. Periyaar University and Government Engineering College (which partly explains why they bought land in this area). These devotees were inspired by H.H. Bhakti Vikasa Swami Maharaj and work under his guidance and blessings.
Salem is a Tamil Nadu town with nearly a million inhabitants (“ten lakhs”) and is a reputed business center, with a large retail market in gold ornaments and jewelry.
The Anglo-Saxon word “Salem” comes from the word Samskrita “Shailam” or “hill”.
There is a well-known “mountain resort” which became popular during the days of the British government, Yercaud, located twenty-five miles from Salem at a height of just over four thousand feet. It remains a popular place for summer visitors.
The first ISKCON center opened in 1999 when few enthusiastic brahmacars arrived in this southern Indian city from Andra Pradesh, rented a house in New Fairlands and started distributing books and Sunday programs. evening.
The deities of Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai arrived in 2002 at a temporary place on Gandhi Road, which was graciously offered to us by a member of life, free of charge, for two years. In 2003, a small plot of land was acquired in Rajaram Nagara and the center has been transferred there for the time being. Later, this land was sold and three acres of beautiful land were purchased.
The new land is located just three kilometers from Salem, near the main road that leads to Bangalore, known as the Bangalore-Madurai road, which is being upgraded to a four-lane highway. There is great economic development on both sides of the road and land prices are “pulling through the roof”. It is a great blessing for ISKCON to have been able to acquire this much of the private land “on time”.
