Telangana’s Bathukamma Stories:

Batukamma means Bathuku = life, Amma = female names and mother. Bathuku + Amma = Batukamma.

Bathukamma Story 1:

There was a king named Dhramangada and his wife Satyavati in Chola dynasty.They had hundred Sons all of them died in a war. After the war the king and the queen dont had any childers so they prayed to Goddess Lakshmi urging her to be born as their daughter on earth. The Goddess got impressed by the king and queen’s dedication, was born as Princess Lakshmi in the Chola dynasty.

She was very beautiful, powerful and eternal. Thus, thereafter, all young unmarried women pray and worship her to attain bliss and happiness when they get married.

According to myths, Goddess Gauri killed Mahishasur the king of demons during this period and out of fatigue, she went off to sleep. She was awakened by prayers of devotees on the day of Dashami.

Bathukamma is also celebrated to respect Goddess Parvati who also happens to be an passionate lover of flowers.

Bathukamma Story 2:

Batukamma festival was started centuries ago and still celebrated as grand cultural event in this place.

The traditional story of Batukamma Panduga is mentioned in one of the historical texts scripted in Telugu. Centuries ago, King Dharmangada of Chola Dynasty who was ruling South India. After his marriage he was childless for many years. After performing many pujas and rituals, his wife gave birth to Goddess Lakshmi.

Baby Lakshmi survived many accidents. So, her parents named her Batukamma. Since then, Batukamma festival is celebrated by young girls in Telangana region. The purpose of this festival is to worship Goddess Lakshmi in the belief that the young girls would get good husbands as their wish. It is celebrated for nine days beginning from the Padyami of the month Ashvayuja.

History of Bathukamma

Bathukamma Story 3:

There is traditional story about Bathukamma mentioned in Telugu scripts. Daksha performed a Yagna and invited everyone except his youngest daughter, Gauri, who married Lord Shiva against his wish. In spite of Shivas will, Gauri went to the Yagna and she was insulted along with Lord Shiva. She was unable to tolerate the insult and sacrificed her life by setting herself in fire. Wishing to bring her back, women present her flowers and make turmeric idol of the Goddess and sing and dance around the idol of Bathukamma.
