About Bali Pratipada:
Bali Puja, also known as Bali Pratipada, is performed on the first day of Kartik Pratipada, which usually occurs on the next day of Diwali Puja. Bali Puja coincides with Govardhan Puja, but there is a difference between them. Govardhan Puja is dedicated to Govardhan hills and Lord Krishna, whereas Bali Puja is associated with Demon king Bali.
Because of the boon conferred by the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu, Demon king Bali is worshipped in India during Diwali. As per the legends, Demon King Bali was pushed to Patala (the Netherworld) by Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana Avatar.
However, as requested by King Bali, Lord Vishnu allowed him three days to visit the earth. It is believed that during these days, King Bali resides on earth and gives blessings to his people.
Religious texts suggest that the image of King Bali, along with his wife Vindhyavali, should be drawn at the center of the house, and should be adorned with five different colors. This five colored image is worshipped during Bali Puja.
In South India, King Bali is worshipped during Onam festival and the legend behind Onam is the same as that of Bali Puja in North India.
