Sri Kalyana Sundareswarar Swamy Temple is a Shiva temple constructed 1000 years ago by Anna Thatha is located in Avaniyapuram, Madurai District, Tamil Nadu State. The main deity is Kalyana Sundaeswarar and his consort is Goddess Bala Meenambica. Kalyana Sundareswarar is an incarnation of Lord Shiva facing in the East direction and built-in Dravidian style of architecture. The Fish symbol is carved in the pillars. There is a koneru named Surya Theertham. Thirugnanasambandar came here to sing Pillai Thamizh to cure the disease of a Pandya King.
The wedding posture is one of the 25 forms of Lord Shiva. He appears here in his wedding posture with Mother Balameenambica. Vinayaka Swamy is worshipped as Santhana Vinayaka Swamy. Childless couples pray with Vilwa leaves for Child boon. Margazhi Tiruvadhirai, Purattasi Navaratri, Tirukarthikai and monthly Pradosha pujas are performed in this temple.
A Shiva devotee came to the house of Anna Thatha who was also a devotee of Shiva. The former said that he would return home after his worship at Madurai temple as there was no temple for him there. The devotee did not return to Anna Thatha even though it was too late. The Lord appeared in Anna Thatha’s dream and revealed that He alone had come to his house and asked him to renovate the temple that existed before. Anna Thatha built the temple himself and prepared it for public worship.
