About Avittathur Mahadeva Temple:

The temple of Avittathur, which is over 2000 years old and is one of the 108 Maha Siva Kshethras, is known as Thaliparambu, Sukhapuram, Irinjalakuda and Peruvanam Gramams. Previously, temple ownership was granted to local families and, from 1985, the management of temple activities was entrusted to a committee registered under the name “Siva Kshethra Samithi”.

The temple is preserved as a national monument by the ASI. The temple is located on a composite wall with an extension of 3 ¼ acres of square shaped land. Sreekovil rounded, about 50 feet “Dwaja Peedam” (flagpole) and “Nadappura” definitely add an ethnic and exemplary temple stature. The stories of Kiratham, Palazhy Mathanam and Ramayanam are inscribed on the inner pillars and sculptures around Srekovil. There are still inscriptions of stone in the temple (Pradakshina vazhi) that archaeologists confirm are the writings of the thirteenth century. The writings at the entrance to Sreekovil are well known as “Avittathur Sasanam”, allegedly proclaimed by King Kulasekhara Kotha Ravi during his twentieth year.

Lord Siva is presiding here in this temple. Deity is installed facing west and temple sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) is constructed round in shape as usually seen in all temples.
