Shree Sudama Dwarka Temple is a significant temple located near the Dwarakadeesh Temple in Gujarat. This ancient temple was built during the 12th century and is considered one of the Nava Dwaraka temples. Sree Krishna, the Hindu deity, is the presiding deity of this temple.
Sudama, also referred to as Kuchela, is widely known as a Brahmin friend of Sri Krishna from Mathura. The Bhagavata Purana narrates the story of Sudama’s journey to Dwaraka to meet Krishna. Sudama was born as a destitute man to relish transcendental experiences.
The temple is located near the water and is enclosed by a bridge, which is beautifully painted in white on the carvings. Sudhama, one of the Panch Dwarka, resided in this area. Sudhama and Sri Krishna were childhood friends and trained under the same master, Sandipani. The temple is known by various names such as Sudhama Dwaraka, Sudhamapuri, and Kuchelapatnam.
It is best to start the Dwarka pilgrimage at Porbandar and visit the temple dedicated to Sudama, the childhood friend of Lord Krishna. Porbandar was once known as Sudamapuri or the city of Sudama. The temple is located in the middle of Porbandar and dates back to the 12th century. However, the present temple’s construction goes back to 1902 by Bhavsinhji Maharaj of Porbandar on a grand scale with beautifully carved pillars and arches. The temple houses the idols of Lord Krishna, Sushila, the wife of Sudama, and Sudama himself.
