Importance of Seemantham:
Seemantham is Baby Shower by Hindu tradition. It is performed in preparation for a woman’s first delivery, and its primary functions are to satisfy the pregnant woman’s desire, bless her, and ensure a safe delivery and a healthy baby. Importance of Annaprasanam:
Annaprasanam is the ceremony to initiate the first solid food to a child. A priest performs this ritual while making a wish for the child’s good health. It is usually held in the fifth month after birth. In addition to the honey, milk and curd given during the naming ceremony, rice is now added as the child starts eating solid foods.
Importance of Akshara Abhyasam:
Akshara Abhyasam or Vidhya Arambham for children is initiation into learning. The father holds the child’s right hand and, to the chanting of priest who asks God’s blessings, he helps the child trace the alphabet on a plate of rice with a golden ring. The child is thus initiated into study.
Importance of Upanayanam:
The Upanayanam makes the boy eligible for the study of the Vedas. Literally Upanayanam means ‘taking near’. Upa means ‘near’ and nayanam means ‘going’; that is the act of going to a teacher to learn. Yagnopavitha Dhaaranam or putting on the Holy thread is performed during the Upanayanam ceremony to the brahmachari boy. The boy is taught the Gãyathri Manthra by his father or teacher. After the upanayanam, the brahmachari boy is expected to recite the Gayatri Mantra and perform Sandhya rituals three times every day.
Importance of Shashtiabthapoorthi:
Shashtiabthapoorthi refers to the completion of 60 years of life on earth, marking a milestone in one’s life. A special homam is performed to appease all dieties.
Importance of Wedding:
Marriage is regarded as the most important social event in Indian culture. The Hindu marriage is regarded as a sacrament and the Hindu male needs to get married to enter a vital part of his life – the ‘grihasthashramam’. Wedding traditions vary according to each family and custom. Compatibility is important and horoscopes of the bride and groom are compared to judge the match. In addition, the time and date of the ceremony are decided by astrological charts.
Importance of Engagement:
Among the various functions that precede a wedding, the engagement ceremony is the most important since it officially marks the beginning of the wedding rituals. It is known by different names in different regions of the country – Misri, ring ceremony, aashirwad, and mangni. Engagement is an important wedding celebration and holds a lot of significance in Indian wedding traditions.
Importance of Bhoomi Puja:
Bhoomi Puja or the Ground Breaking Ceremony is performed while laying the foundation stone to a new building. A small 64-part diagram denoting the manduka padam and the Vaasthu Purusha within it is marked in the NE part of the property using different seeds and colouring substances. An effigy of the Vaasthu Purusha is made in straw and burnt to ward of evil spirits. This ritual is usually carried out in the morning.
