Babulnath Temple History:
The construction of the first Babulnath Temple in Mumbai faced opposition from the Parsi community as the land belonged to them, and there were five Dakhmas (Parsi final resting places) in the area. However, the resistance continued until the late 1800s when the courts eventually ruled in favor of the temple, settling the issue.
Since Raja Bhimdev’s Time:
The Shiva Linga and Idols were originally consecrated in the 12th century by the Hindu king Bhimdev. Over time, the temple was lost and buried, but during the period of 1700 to 1780, the idols were re-discovered (unearthed). The first temple was then built in 1780 in the Maharashtriyan style.
During the rediscovery, 5 original idols were dug out, including the main Shiva Linga, Ganesh, Hanuman, Parvati and one more. Out of these, the first four idols are now present in the temple. The fifth one was broken during the excavation and had to be immersed in the sea. Today, Babulnath Temple is a very famous temple, known for its active blessings and attracts many devotees in the 21st century.
