The paigahs who married the daughters of the Nizams were the noblest in the princely state of Hyderabad, after the Nizams family. Paigahs was the only noble family that the Sultan allowed them to have their private army.

The Paigah / Maqhbara Shams al-Umara tombs have been decorated with exceptionally elaborate geometric patterns and carefully created designs. These tombs have been skillfully carved and their inlaid mosaic is impressive. The famous work of “Jali” makes it even more attractive. Each tomb was designed differently, with a unique style and design. Each Paigah tomb is composed of an elaborate roof and marble fences decorated with exemplary geometric and floral patterns. However, if you look closely, you may notice the difference in design between the graves. The semicircular arches, which represent Indian architecture, are also visible here.

Spread over an area of 30 to 40 acres, the origin of the tombs of Paigah dates back to the end of the 18th century. One of Hyderabad’s most popular tourist spots, the Tombs of Paigah are known for their architectural excellence. The tombs, one of the best examples of Indo-Sarcenic architecture, present a fine blend of Asaf Jah and Rajputani style architecture. The tomb has a talent and skilfully carved and their inlaid mosaic tile work is breathtaking and you can also see the jail work makes it more attractive. There is a unique and different style of design for each and every tomb. Mostly the tomb consists of elaborate covering and marble fences which are adorned with geometrical and floral designs. When you visit this place you can identify different designs of tomb with semi circular arches, representing Indian architecture.

At the entrance of the tombs, you can find iron tablet with inscriptions about paigah lineage. There is another key feature of these tombs is that they demonstrate the royal family tree. Abdul Fateh Khan Tegh Jung founded paigah nobility who had served the second Nizam. The title of ‘shams-ul-umra’ which means the sun amongst the masses was bestowed to him by Nizam. In the year of 1786 Abdul Fateh Khan Tegh Jung was buried at the entrance of the complex and the tomb of teng jung presents a fascinate architecture with exquisite lattice work with a massive canopy. Later it is renovated by his son Amir E Kabir.

It came to be known as paiagh tomb which becomes the last resting abode of the other members of the family well. paiagh tomb had primary nobility in the court of Nizams.
