The Mathas, which played very significant role in the history of Srisailam, were closely linked with the religious and cultural activities of the temple in the medieval times. Acted as educational institutions devoted to higher learning in different fields, these Mathas catered to the intellectual and spiritual needs of the society. Due to the existence and spiritual activities of these Mathas, Srisailam became a powerful Saivaite centre. It is presumed that the origin of these Mathas dates back to 7th Century A.D. According to the historical inscriptions, there were Eleven Mathas in Srisailam. But presently, only five Mathas exist. These Mathas are renowned for their rich sculptural and architectural wealth. Several Sivalingas were installed and worshipped in these Mathas since centuries. These Mathas were also responsible for the administration of the temple in the medieval period.
These Mathas are popularly known as the Panchamathas, namely Ghanta Matham, Bheemasankara Matham, Vibhooti Matham, Rudraksha Matham and Sarangadhara Matham. Also there is a temple of Veerabhadra located along the row if these Mathas, which is named as Veerabhadra Matha. These Mathas are located within 2 km to the west of the main temple.
