Raghurajpur Crafts Village Puri, Odisha | Artistic Village in Odisha

Villagers or the craftsmen of this place were supplying decorative items to temples and Mathas (temples constructed mostly by famous devotees located around Sri Jaganatha temple.) of Puri. They also supply Patas which used in the throne of Lord Jaganatha inside temple. During car festival several the chariots are decorated by paints of these artisans. These craftsmen are also called locally as Chitrakaras.

This village is also the birthplace of famous Odissi Dance Guru Sri Kelu Charan Mohapatra. There are around hundred families in the village. All houses are divided in two lanes. This village is located within tall coconut, palm and other tress. In all houses of the village, front room is used as show room and they also work from here.

Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) selected this village to revive the ancient wall paintings of Odisha and to give this village its rightful place both in the cultural and tourist maps of the country. It was declared as a heritage village by INTACH in 2000 and became a major rural tourist destination of Odisha. It attracts thousands of domestic and foreign tourists. It is the first village to be developed as part of the rural tourism promotion project. Every year Raghurajpur hosts a spring festival in the month of February/March named as 'Basant Utsav - Parampara'. It was first organized in 1993 by State Tourism Department and Astern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata. Huge crowd visits this village during this festival.

To reach Raghurajpur one has to get down at Chandanpur bus stop, which is about 10 km from Puri and 50 km from Bhubaneswar on National Highway No.203 connecting Puri and Bhubaneswar, two important tourist destinations of the country. From Chandanpur one has to take a cycle-rickshaw or walk on a 1.3 km scenic road to reach this village. One may also hire a taxi either from Puri or from Bhubaneswar to reach the village.

Mark Craft:

Patta Painting, Palm leaf painting / Engraving, tusser / silk painting, stone carving, coconut painting, wood carving, Papier Mache / Mask, Cow dung Toys, Ganjapa playing cards are some of the different types of crafts developed here. Here some paintings take months to complete.

Cow Dung Toys:

These toys are prepared by using husk, cow dung and lime powder.

INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) has listed this as Heritage village and completed several projects here. Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) is developing this as a rural tourism center to promote art and crafts of this area.
