According to the Puranas, it is a temple about 4000 years old. There is archaeological evidence confirming that the temple and Pushkarini are present from the 15th century. In 1561 A.C a devotee laid out a garden, Bhoga Mantapam. In ancient times, the flowers from this garden were sent to Bhadrachalam Sita Rama Swamy. You have to climb 740 steps to reach the temple. There is no ghat path. The king named Subhamatudu did penance by invoking Lord Vishnu. When Lord Vishnu appeared before him, he asked the Lord to stand on his head with his consort Mahalakshmi. Lord Vishnu told him to pray for Lord Shiva to grant his wish. He did so and as a result, he took the form of a hill which is called Sobhanachala. In accordance with Sobhanachala’s wish, Lord Siva and Lord Vishnu stayed on this hill.
