Swayambhu Sri Mahadeva Temple is located at Tambi Surla, Mollem Goa. The most ancient temple in the whole of Goa. The temple was built in Jain style in the 12th century. The temple faces east so that the rays of the rising sun fall on the deity at the crack of dawn. Lord Shiva, Sri Vishnu and Lord Brahma, with their consorts appear on panels at the sides of the temple. River Surla flows near Tambdi Surla Swayambhu Sri Mahadeva Temple.

There is a headless Nandi (bull, Shiva’s vehicle) in the center of the mandap, surrounded by four matching columns. The symbol of the Kadamba kingdom, an elephant trampling a horse is carved on the base of one of the columns. The river Ragado, (via village Keri, Sattari) flows nearby and is reachable for ritual bathing by a flight of stone steps.

This temple is a treat to the eyes because of its unique style of construction. It is the only monument of Kadamba-Yadava architecture. Kadamba dynasty was ruling during the time when this temple was constructed. Tambdi Surla is located inside the area of Bhagwan Mahavir National Park. Situated amidst nature, it is a divine place. The intricate carvings of the temple adorn the interior and sides of the temple. Mahadev Temple is approximately 65 kilometers from the capital Panaji. It is accessible from the north via minor roads 22 kilometers south of the main town of Valpoi in Sattari Taluka. The temple is at the foot of the Anmod Ghat, which connects Goa to the state of Karnataka.

The temple is built in the Kadamba style from basalt, carried across the mountains from the Deccan plateau and carved by craftsmen. It is considered to be the only specimen of Kadamba architecture in basalt stone preserved and available in Goa.
