Vayalpadu Pattabhi Rama Swamy Temple is located in Vayalpadu / Valmikipuram, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. This Rama Temple was built by Lord Jambavantha in Tretayuga as (Bhakti) Devotion to Sri Rama. The uniqueness of the temple is that Lord Sri Rama will be seen in the posture of the coronation ceremony, as the presiding deity of the goddess Sita Devi and also by her brother Lakshmana, Bharata, Shatrughna and Hanuman. Here Lord Sri Rama is also called Pratapa Rama because Lord Sri Rama is holding a sword.
The temple features a main hall, a sanctum sanctorum, and several other smaller shrines dedicated to various deities. The specialty of this temple is, the Sri Rama idol facing North and the local people say that it is the only temple in Andhra Pradesh with a North face. There is also a hill called Veerannakonda with the shrine of Veerabhadra. Here the sage Valmiki sat on this hill while writing the “Ramayana”.
Tallapaka Ananmacharya penned as many as 21 ‘Sankeertanas’ in praise of the Pattabhirama Swamy deity here.
The temple has a rich history and is believed to have been built during the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century. The temple has undergone many renovations and additions over the centuries, and today it stands as a beautiful example of Dravidian architecture. In 1997, TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) was adopted and from then the temple has seen drastic growth.
The temple is known for its grand annual festival, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion by the local community. The festival attracts thousands of devotees from all over the region, who come to participate in the various rituals and cultural programs that are organized as part of the celebration.
