About Vaikasi Visakam:

Vaikasi Visakam, also known as Vaikasi Vishaka, is observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Muruga, which is celebrated on Visakam Nakshatra in Tamil month Vaikasi. Vaikasi is the second Solar month in Tamil Calendar and Visakam Nakshatra is the sixteenth star out of twenty-seven stars, which appears at least once in every month. Vaikasi month is known as Vrishabha month and Visakam Nakshatra as Vishakha Nakshatra in some other Hindu Calendars. Vaikasi Visakam usually occurs in the month of May or June.

Lord Muruga is popularly known as God of courage, wealth and wisdom, and his birth anniversary is celebrated by Tamil devotees all over the world. Lord Muruga is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and his elder brother is Lord Ganesha. Lord Muruga is also known by many other names like Lord Senthil, Lord Kumaran, Lord Subramanyam, Lord Shanmugam, etc. He has six faces and hence He is also known as Lord Arumugam. Using His six faces, he can see East, West, North, South, Heaven and Patala (netherworld) at the same time.

On Vaikasi Visakam day, when the Visakam Nakshatram coincides with the full moon or Pournami, devotees move in procession, carrying milk to Subramania temples to perform milk Abhishekam to Lord Muruga.
