About Simha Sankranti:
Sankranti falls in the solar transition from one zodiac sign to another and Simha Sankranti is one of the twelve Sankranti that occur every year. During Simha Sankranti, the sun is in transit from Karka Rashi (Cancer) to Simha Rashi (Leo). In South India, it is also known as simha sankraman and this day is celebrated more significantly in South India than in North India. This day begins the month of Chinga according to the Malayalam calendar, the month of Avni according to the Tamil month and the month of Bhadra according to the Bengali calendar.
The men and women of the Kumaun region in Himachal Pradesh, with the exception of all of South India, celebrate Simha Sankranti with great zeal. Sankraman punya snan is an important custom of this day that is only performed in holy water. During the Chand dynasty, ordinary people offered fruits and flowers to members of the royal family, which was called Olag’s right.
Rituals of Simha Sankranti:
In Simha Sankranti, the devotees worship Lord Vishnu, the Sun God and Lord Narsimha Swami.
Nariyal (coconut) abhisheka is performed this day as it is considered a part of the sacred bath. Only fresh coconut water is used for this purpose.
Lord Ganesh is revered before the rest of the puja ceremony to please him and his name is the appada puja.
The Hoovina bid to Lord Vishnumurthy continues for a month until the sun passes to Kanya Rashi.
Flowers, fruits and various sweets are offered to the deity and the mantras are sung to seek blessings from the Lord.
