The famous Balkampet Yellamma Temple dedicated to Goddess, the mother of the Universe is situated in the suburbs of Hyderabad in Balkampet. Yellamma is said to be the incarnation of Maa Kali, hence the Bonalu festival is also celebrated here with much excitement. There celebration of the festival however starts after the beginning of the celebrations at Golkonda and Ujjaini Mahankali temples. The temple draws maximum crowd on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The temple also celebrates the marriage ceremony of Yellamma Kalyanotsavam. Masanpally Narsing Rao Yadav is the Chairman of Balkampet Yellamma Temple.
The temple dates back to 15th Century AD. What we see now is the renovated one done in the early 20th century AD. Interestingly, the idol of the Goddess is around 10 feet deeper than the ground level. Further the well in the temple also has its importance. The water here ‘Theertham’ is also a cure to many ailments. The Akhand Jyoth is lit since the renovation of the temple started in the 20th century. Moreover the temple has dedicated shrines to many other Gods and Goddesses like Ganesha, Nagadevta, Rajarajeshwari, and Sri Pochamma.
The Goddess is also known as Maa Jaggadamba and Goddess Renuka. There are some legendries on the Renuka form of the Goddess. The story goes back to the ages of the Mahabharata. Devi Renuka was married to Jamadugni Muni. They were blessed with five sons, Parshurama being the youngest of them all. Once the muni got annoyed with her over a household issue and asked her to flee away. Renuka in her bid to get back to her husband worshipped a Shivalinga and went back to the muni on the fourth day. But the muni, still annoyed ordered his sons to behead their mother. On refusal the four sons were turned to ashes by the gaze of their father. But Parashuram beheaded his mother and the village woman who had given shelter to his mother. Seeing this, the happy father granted a boon to his son. Parashuram asked for the lives of his family members and the other woman. However, while joining the bodies with the heads, the heads of the two women got interchanged. But the muni accepted the woman with Renuka’s body. The other lady with Renuka’s head then came to be known as Yellamma the Universal Mother. Thus both the ladies were two different forms of the same being.
