The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir includes: Stone Mandir, Haveli Wood Exhibition and Understanding Hindu Dharma. Open to visitors from 9:00 to 19:00 hours throughout the year.
Chicago Shri Swaminarayan Temple:
The Mandir is a place of worship and prayer for followers of Hinduism. The structure itself is built according to Shilpa Shastra, a collection of architectural treatises that have been an integral part of Indian architecture and engineering for thousands of years. Sacred images and adoration ceremonies in the Mandir form the very heart of the elevation of the soul to the summit of God’s realization according to Hindu philosophy. The Swaminarayan Mandirs, around the world fulfill the ancient and noble concept of the Hindu tradition of the Mandirs.
Chicago Shri Swaminarayan Temple Haveli:
Next to the Mandir is a unique cultural complex: a traditional wooden Haveli with a complex design. The Haveli represents a kind of traditional architectural structures of India that developed during the Rajput period, in the 15th and 19th centuries, especially in the western Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Characterized by an open central patio, the Haveli presents the immense talent of Indian artisans to work with wood. It is evident in the impressive variety of ornamental and symbolic motifs that adorn many supports, pillars, arches and balconies.
Understanding Hinduism:
Cross the beginning of civilization; Discover the history and beauty of Hinduism.
“Understanding Hinduism” is a well-documented pictorial presentation of facts, figures and information. For the novice or researcher, the exhibition is inspiring and informative.
Souvenir Shop:
The souvenir shop is located in the left hall of Haveli, flanked by a large courtyard lit by the sky. It is filled with a wide selection of books, postcards, CDs, DVDs, herbal products and gifts for all ages, tastes and budgets.
Dress Code & other Information:
Dress Code: All clothing should cover the shoulders and knees (bandages are provided). Please leave all your belongings / backpacks in your vehicle.
Photography and Videography: Personal use photography can be taken from the ground, outside the Mandir only. There is no photo or video inside the Mandir. No photography or professional photo shoot is allowed with photographic equipment.
