Troy Hindu Temple

Bharatiya Temple History:

In the early 70’s, there was a dream among Hindus living in the Detroit metropolitan area to establish a perpetual religious and cultural organization that could satisfy the spiritual and cultural needs of the Indian community. An initiative was taken to achieve this goal when a group of about 30 people met on January 25, 1975 at the Northwood Inn in Royal Oak to discuss this possibility. The idea of establishing a Hindu temple was born during this meeting.

Following this meeting, a seven-person ad-hoc committee was formed to organize a fundraising effort for this purpose and to draft an appropriate constitution that could serve as a guide to streamline the process to create such an organization. It was decided that the organization would represent all the positive aspects of India’s great heritage and would try to promote all aspects of Indian life, philosophy and Indian religion. The constitution and laws prepared by the ad-hoc committee were adopted at the first fundraising event held at the Kingsley Inn on March 21, 1975. It was decided to provide a temple for devotional worship and other cultural activities. . A total of $ 140,000 of promises made by some 200 families. A new committee was commissioned to select an appropriate site for the Temple and thereafter, in accordance with its recommendations, an excellent 18-acre lot was purchased in the northwest corner of Troy for a total cost of $ 70,000. This is where the Temple is currently located.

Initially, it was planned to develop a temple with a budget of 500,000 dollars that can accommodate between 350 and 400 people. On Independence Day, July 4, 1976, the Bhoomi Pooja was held. The organization of the pooja and the celebration took place under the direction of Sri Satguru Sant Keshavadas and Dr. T. Venkateswaran, Professor of Hindu Studies at the University of Detroit. Soon, the whole project grew and generous donations began to arrive for the construction fund.

Under the able leadership of Sant Keshavadas, Brahmacharini Pavitraji and Acharya Sampat Kumar, the inauguration ceremonies took place on June 1, 1980. With funds raised of approximately $105,000, the construction of the Temple began almost immediately, from October 2nd, 1980 on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. The National Bank of Michigan has approved an interim loan for construction.

The formal inauguration took place on 19 July 1981 by Swami Chinmayananda and Satguru Keshavadas. Another step was taken on 19 and 20 November 1983 with the installation of Sri Lakshmi Narayana, Sri Ganesh and Sri Hanuman deities under the direction of Sri Janaki Rama Sastry of Raja Rameshwari Peetham and Swami Alamlokananda of the Vivekananda Monastery and the retreat in Ganges, Michigan

Since then, the Temple has grown considerably in terms of activities, expansion of the building and size of the congregation.
