Sri Biligiriranganathaswamy Temple History:
According to legend, sage Vasishta did penance here in these hills for Lord Venkateswara. The Lord appeared to him and blessed him. To mark this moment, sage Vasishta installed Lord Ranganatha Swamy Idol and worshiped the deity. It is said that Lord Rama and Lakshmana in search of Sita Devi came to this place and offered prayers to the deity.
According to local folklore, Sri Ranganatha Swamy loved and married a girl named Kusumabale from the solinga dame
community. Therefore, the community of Solinga treats Ranganatha Swamy like their dame (brother-in-law).
The oldest reference to this holy place is available in the Bhrahmanda Purana in its “Teertha Prashamsara Khanda”. The place is also called “Champakaranya” (the flower forest of Champaka) among the pursnas and also “Gajaranya” (the elephant forest) during the reign of the Ganges dynasty. This is how ‘Shwethadreesha’ became worshiped as ‘Shwethadreesa’.
