Ganesh Tok Temple is situated 6500 meters above sea level on a beautiful hill, it is one of the most popular Ganesh temples in Gangtok, Sikkim and can be reached after a steep 7-kilometer climb from the main town. Located near the Tashi Viewpoint on a hill adjacent to the Sikkim TV Tower, it offers spectacular views of the city and, on a clear day, even of the magnificent Khanchendzonga, the third highest mountain in the world. The temple was built in the year 1952 53 by the efforts of Shri Appa B. Pant, the former Political Officer of Sikkim.
Adorned with colorful prayer patakas (flags) hoisted and tied along the pathways, the path to Ganesh’s tok almost looks like a rainbow. There is a circular balcony around the temple and an observation room to enjoy the panoramic view of the vast green expanses, the Raj Bhavan complex and the whole city of Gangtok in all its glory.
Even though the temple is so small that it can barely accommodate a person, the temple is still a great attraction for all tourists visiting Gangtok. Often visited by tourists when visiting Hanuman Tok, about 4 kilometers from the temple, Ganesh Tok is a must-see for anyone considering a visit to Gangtok.
If you are lucky enough to plan your trip around the 10 days of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, you can witness various Hindu rituals. The temple is adorned with lights and flowers, hymns are sung followed by an Aarti ceremony and fireworks, creating a fascinating aura of divinity. The best time to visit Gangtok and Tok Temple is from September to December.
