The ISKCON temple at Nampally, Hyderabad has its name in the list of most popular tourist places in the city. ISKCON stands for International Society for Krishna Consciousness and is popularly known as the Hare Krishna Movement. The movement follows the Hindu scriptures, Bhagvad Gita and Shrimad Bhagavatam.
It follows the vaishnav culture. The leading deity in the ISKCON Temple is Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu. However, the temple also has other deities there like Sri Gaura-Nitai, Sri Jagannatha Baladeva-Subhadra, and Sri Radha Madana-Mohana. These deities are also worshipped in the temple along with Sri Krishna.
The temple society celebrates many other festivals like Mahanagar Sankirtan and Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra every year. It also celebrates Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Gour Pournamai, Narsimha Caturdashi, Nityanand Triyodashi, Ram Navami, Balram Jayanti and other festivals every year. The temple draws crowds from all walks of life. These are the days when the administration needs to take special care for and take disciplinary actions in the premises. Many advanced gadgets have been installed in the temple to detect unwarranted activities by the lunatics. Metal detectors have been put up in places to ensure thorough checking of the visitors.
On other days, the temple carries out the daily rituals activities. But special programs are performed on Sundays. The temple distributes prasad to nearly 1000 devotees daily.
Another major attraction of the mandir or temple is the Bhakti Vruksha. It facilitates the devotees to consciousness about their own self and guides them on how to exercise bhakti yogas and sustain good association.
The society was estblished by a kolkatta resident His Divine Grace Abhay Caran Arvind Bhakti Vedanta Swami. His disciples know him as Srila Prabhupada. Born to an orthodox vaishnav family in Kolkatta on 1st September 1896, he was initially named as Abhay Caran by his parents. His parents, particularly his father wanted him to become a Krishna devotee. And Abhay Caran did have this natural affection towards Krishna and His teachings since childhood. With years, this affection grew and he developed a passion for the Hindu scriputures and literature about Sri Krishna. Srila Prabhupada went ahead with this passion and wrote and published many books the popular few were “Bhagwat Gita As It Is” (World Record), “SrimadBhagwatam” (Set of 18 Vol.), “PurnaPurushottam SRI KRISHNA”, “Nector of Intructions”, “Nector of Devotion”, “Sri Ishopanishad”. There were many more in the series. The magazine by the name, “Back to Godhood” became very popular amongst the masses.
Srila Prabhupada built 108 temples all over the world and spread the transitional knowledge about the vedas in the local languages to the devotees. As of now, ISKCON has more than 1000 temples with more than 4000 centres across the globe. Pursuant to its mission to feed the unfed, the temple provides Krishna Prasad to more than 200000 students each day. It also provides free education on Bhagwat Gita and other Scriptures.
Spreading the popularity of Sri Krishna, the society has taken to the meditation mantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
