Vellore ISKCON Temple – Tamil Nadu, Timings, Festivals

About Vellore ISKCON Temple:

Vellore, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness was legally initiated by H.G.Akinchana Krishna Das (Director, ISKCON Vellore) H.H.Bhakti Vikasa inspired by Swami (www.bvks.com) in 2003 at a place called Toll Gate with some Brahmacharis. Later, the center moved to Gandhi Nagar, where every Sunday for the festival program many people attended Sunday and began to practice devotional service.
Thus, preaching to the congregation, students have been developed in many ways, which in many families enthusiastically practice devotional service and much devoted full time.

Vellore ISKCON Temple Prasadam Seva

One of the services famous all over the world, both among devotees and the general public is prasadam distribution. Anyone who has tasted it, became astonished by how wonderful simple preparations may be. Many people ask: “How do you prepare it, how do you achieve such taste? I have cooked myself from the recipe found in your book, but it just wasn’t the same.” So the secret lies in Krishna. Food which has not been offered to Krishna, even if cooked in a most professional manner will be bereft of spiritual potency which is present in Krishna prasadam. Thus prasadam distribution shouldn’t be mistakenly taken as food distribution to help the poor. The Hare Krishna movement is meant for the purification of the heart of all people, and as such “Prasadam Seva” is the easy way to achieve this goal. Following strictly the mood, instruction and mission of Srila Prabhupada, ISKCON has made one of it’s aims to profusely distribute Krishna prasadam all over the world helping everyone, the rich and the poor alike, to make progress towards spiritual advancement.

The Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada said: “The temple should be always filled up with Krishna-katha (discourses about Krishna from Srimad-Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita) and distribution of Krishna prasadam. If you eat Krishna prasadam, then gradually you become spiritualized, it has this potency. The spiritual master encourages distribution of prasadam to the public. Ours is not a dry philosophy-simply talk and go away. No. We distribute prasadam, very sumptuous prasadam. In every temple, we offer prasadam to anyone who comes.”

In the past 30 years, ISKCON has distributed 36, 25, 00,000 plates of prasadam all over the world. Every second, 2 plates of prasadam are being distributed somewhere in the world.

ISKCON Vellore also distributes prasadam for thousandas of people during festivals and other programs.
“Prasadam Seva” is a wonderful opportunity to please Krishna and everyone can participate by either distributing or supporting it by becoming a donor.

Vellore ISKCON Temple Harinam Sankirtan

Harinama-sankirtana (the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord) may be most familiar from seeing the devotees out in the streets, dancing and chanting the maha-mantra Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare accompanied by mridangas (two headed drums) and karatalas (hand cymbals). Krishnas holy names are endowed with all of His potencies and this sound vibration can reawaken a person to his spiritual identity and existence. We have forgotten our real identity as spiritual beings, part and parcel of Krishna, and this forgetfulness is the root cause of all our suffering. When a person is asleep he forgets who he really is and in his dreaming he assumes one illusory identity after another, in each existence suffering unnecessarily.

500 years ago Lord Krishna came as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu (or Lord Gauranga). He appeared as a devotee of Krishna (Himself) to reawaken all the conditioned souls by the method of harinama-sankirtana. He would go with His followers into the streets and chant the names of Krishna so that peoples suffering could be ended, and they could take to the real activity, the spiritual activity, of worshiping and serving the Supreme Lord.
