The Edithanur Caves in Kondapur in Medak district is a beautiful destination for the lovers of art and painting. The caves are rich with Neolithic age paintings. These caves are also the study destination for the students of History. Beautiful painting depicting the lives of men and women in the Neolithic age between the years 2300 BC to 900 BC can be found in the caves. The shrine of Mother Goddess from the Medieval era is also found nearby.
One of the paintings depicting the lifestyle of the Neolithic era is that of the hunting scene of the prehistoric era. The painting shows two huge bulls surrounded by men engaged in a hunt. The hunters have been depicted in stick figures are attacking the bull with spears and javelins on its upwards raised horns. There is a debate about the animal in this painting. Some scholars depict the animal as a baby elephant and some say that it indeed is the bull. The painting as such is too realistic.
The cave paintings display few strokes and lines representing the closely resembling things. One such painting is that of a set of wavy lines and the circle. This is interpreted as a fish in water or as Mother Goddess. The paintings have an added element of intrigue thereby enhancing the charm of the place.
One also finds the row of natural caves and cavities. These are scattered throughout Edithanur. The maze of tunnels is also an adventurous place to be explored. These precious paintings are currently put up in Archeological Museum in Kondapur.
The other interesting area in Edithanur is the Siddhula Gutta that is carved out in a niche in the hills surrounding the area. This cave is said to have been inhabited by holy men, alchemists and healers who were known as Siddhas. Many more caves lie undiscovered in Edithanur. Exploring these caves is difficult as legends and rumors of unnatural accidents are in the air.
