Sri Maddi Anjaneya Swamy Temple History, Timings, Sevas

Maddi Anjaneya Swamy Temple is situated in Jangareddyguden, Eluru in Andhra Pradesh. The auspicious occasion of Hanuman Jayanthi is celebrated with great grandeur at the temple. It is believed that unmarried girls can find a suitable life partner by performing 108 Pradakshinam (circumambulations) for seven consecutive Tuesdays. Additionally, worshipping Lord Hanuman on Saturdays is believed to minimize the negative effects of Sani Mahadasa (the period ruled by the planet Saturn).

Long ago, the region was under the rule of the Reddyraju Kings. On November 1st, 1166 A.D., they discovered the sacred shrine of Sri Anjaneya. The temple’s architecture was skillfully designed by the renowned architect Late Ganapathi Sthapati. In the temple, you will find a statue of Sri Hanuman sitting beneath a Maddi tree, holding a fruit in one hand and a Gadha (mace) in the other. This representation signifies the fulfillment of a devotee’s wish by Sri Anjaneya.

Maddi Anjaneya Temple History:

Madvasura was a demon who served Ravana in the Treta yuga. Even though he was a demon, he preferred to lead a satvik life in a peaceful manner. During the Rama-Ravana war in the Treta yuga, he saw Anjaneya (Hanuman) and became a great devotee of Hanuman. He died in the war uttering Lord’s name “Hanuman….”

In the Dwapara Yuga he was reborn as Madvakudu living a peaceful life. During the Kurukshetra war of Mahabharata, he fought in Kourava Sena against Pandavas. He saw Anjaneyaswamy on the flag of Arjuna’s chariot and died in the war.

In Kaliyuga he was born as Madvudu and was travelling across the country. On his way to his pilgrimage, he reached the banks Yerrakaluva River. Every day he took bath in Yerrakaluva and performed penance, praying to Sri Anjaneya Swamy. During this period of penance, he was known as Madhva Maharshi. Because of his old age he could walk with difficulty. One morning while walking towards the river he was about to fall, but suddenly a monkey saved him and served him with fruits. The monkey assisted him every day and offered him fruits, but he was not aware of who the monkey was. But one day Madva Maharshi understood that the monkey was none other than his Lord Sri Anjaneya Swamy and he begged the pardon of the Lord. The next moment Anjaneya Swamy appeared in his real form and told that he served the Rishi willingly and would also grant him a boon of his wish. Madva Maharshi requested the Lord to be with him all the time. Then Anjaneya Swamy granted him a boon to take the form of a Maddi Tree so that he would be always with him as an Idol with fruit in one hand and mace in the other.
