Thirunakkara Mahadevar Temple, located in the heart of Kottayam City, is one of the 108 venerated Shivalayas in Kerala. The temple is around 500 years old and was built by Raja Thekkumkoor. It also retains a series of sculptures and unique murals of various Hindu deities. A common belief is that Shiva’s idol are installed here by the sage Parashurama. The royal family of Thekkukkoor considered the idol as its paradevatha in the form of “Thirunakkara thevar”.
The traditional Kerala architecture of the temple attracts a lot of visitors. The koothambalam, the traditional theatre of the temple, where performances of various traditional art and dance forms are held is famed for its architecture. Murals depicting stories from the epics adorn the walls of the temple.
