Uppiliappan Temple, also known as Thiruvinnagar of Venkatachalapathy Temple is a temple dedicated to Maha Vishnu is located near Thirunageswaram, a village in the outskirts of the Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Uppiliappan Temple architecture is in Dravidian style, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. This Temple is counted as the 60th of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Sri Maha Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is worshiped as Uppiliappan and his consorts are Sri Lakshmi as Bhumi Devi.

The temple is believed to be constructed by the Medieval Cholas of the late 8th century AD, later by the Thanjavur Nayaks. Uppiliappan is believed to have appeared for sage Markandeya and Hindu gods Bhoomadevi, Brahma and Shiva.

Six rituals are observes daily and 3 yearly festivals are celebrated. The chariot festival in the Tamil month of “Panguni” (March–April), is the most important festival . The temple is maintained by the Endowment Board of Tamil Nadu Government.

Tirunageswaram Arulmigu Oppiliappan Temple History:

According to Legends, Sage Markandeya was blessed with a girl child, She emerged from Earth after a long and dedicated penance. The girl child was named as ‘Bhoomi Devi’. The child was so devoted to Oppiliappan, so the Sage thought to marry her to the lord. Markandeya introduced her daughter to the Lord and said that she was so young and dont know how to prepare food. He also said that the Lord might well have to eat food without salt! So gracious was the Lord that he assured Bhoomi Devi’s father that henceforth he would avoid salt and eat food prepared without Uppu (Salt). Hence the lord got the name Uppiliappan. Devotees are not allowed to take Salt or any food item with Salt after Garuda Shrine.

47 verses Pasurams were composed by Vaishnavite saints Poigai Azhwar, Peyazhwar, Thirumangai Azhwar and Nammazhwar on this temple and its presiding deity.
