Sri Varadaraja Swamy Temple is located in front of Kanipakam Sri Swayambu Varasidhi Vinayakaswamy Temple which is 12 km from Chittoor and 70 km from Tirupati.
Devotees believe that performing Sri Satyanaraya Vrata by newly married couples in this temple will lead their lives to everlasting happiness and prosperity.
The temple faces the east and is enclosed by a surrounding wall. Entry is through an eastern gopura. The temple layout includes the inner sanctum (Garbhagriha), a vestibule (Antarala), an assembly hall (Mandapam), and a larger hall (Mahamandapam). In front of the Mahamandapam is the shrine dedicated to Garuda. The temple’s main deity, Varadaraja, is housed in the Garbhagriha and faces east. The temple’s architecture features intricate details, with various ornate elements and sculptures.
The garbhagriha’s outer walls have niches flanked by pilasters, crowned by decorative makara torana arches. The vimana above the Garbhagriha is multi-tiered, with decorative layers, showcasing sculptures of various deities like Matsya Avatar, Narasimha, Vamana, and Sri Rama. The Garbhagriha holds the stone image of Varadaraja along with consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi.
Inside the Antarala, there’s an image of Andal. The mandapam has pillars with Chola-style capitals and a vedi with loose stone images of Alvars. The Muhamandapam has pillars alternating between square and octagonal sections, adorned with deity sculptures. The garuda shrine to the east features a simple square structure with an ekatala vimana.
Overall, the Varadaraja temple’s architecture indicates that it was constructed during the later Chola period, approximately in the 12th – 13th centuries A.D. The loose stone images within the temple may date back to the 14th – 15th century A.D.
