About Dussehra, Vijaya Dashami, Dasara or Dashain

Dussehra, also called as Vijayadashmi, is an extremely enchanting festival of India which is celebrated with full of festive spirit and merriment throughout the country. As per Hindu epic Ramayana, Lord Rama performed chandi-puja in order to solicit the blessings of goddess Durga to kill Ravana, because Ravana, the ten-headed demon king kidnapped his beloved wife Sita.

Pleased on Rama’s Chandi puja, goddess Durga disclosed Rama the secret on how he could kill Ravana. After killing Ravana in the war, Lord Rama with his wife Sita and younger brother Laxmana, returned his kingdom of Ayodhya on the day of ‘Diwali’. In Northern India devotes perform the legend which is called Ramalila, where actors dressed as Rama shoot flaming arrows at huge effigy of Ravana filled with firecrackers, thus celebrating the victory over evil.

Considered to be the most auspicious day, it is traditionally believed that if any new venture is initiated on Dussehra day, it would become successful. So whenever people want to start a new venture such as laying of foundation of new building, opening of a new business establishment or initiating formal education of a child, they prefer to do it on Dusserah day. On Dussehra day agricultural implements, machines and tools of manufacturers, books and household articles are placed before the image of goddess Durga and worshipped.
