Hasanamba temple is a famous Shakti temple, situated in Hassan, Karnataka. Shakthi Devi or Amba is worshipped as Hasanamba, she is also considered as Sapta Matrika here. The Hasanamba temple opens each year on Thursday after Ashwin Purnima according to the traditional Hindu calendar followed in Karnataka and closes after 8 days on Balipadyami day. Hasanamba Temple opened only 8 days a year before the Diwali festival. Darbar Ganapati and Siddeshwara are the other deities in this Shakthi temple.
The 5 tier Rajagopuram was constructed recently in Dravidian style. Most of the temple was built in the twelfth century A.D by kings of the Hoysala dynasty who were followers of Jainism. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Hasanamba, “Hasya”, which means smile. It is believed that the kind goddess smiles and blesses her devotees.
Here Amba is served with a lit lamp, food, two bags full of rice, few flowers for the rest of the year. The specialty of the temple is that the lamp lit this year will be alive until the temple reopens next year. Even the flowers retain their freshness and the rice never gets rotten all year round.
A statue of Lanka King Ravanasura with 9 heads and a veena in his hands is the most unusual thing in the temple.

It is believed that Amma Hasanamba turned the mother-in-law of one of her devotees into a rock to torment the devotees. It is said that every year the stone moves an inch, and when the stone hits the feet of the goddess, the Kaliyuga will come to an end.
Four thieves who tried to steal the jewel from a sculpture were turned into stones, according to a myth.
