Emoor Bhagavathy Temple also known as Hemambika Temple stands as a testament to spirituality, peace, and devotion. It is believed that four Ambika temples – Sri Balambika at Kanyakumari, Goddess Lokambika at Loakanarkavu near Vadakara, Sri Mookambika at Mangaluru and Sri Hemambika at Palakkad were consecrated by Sri Parashurama for the safety of Kerala.
The uniqueness of Emoor Bhagavathy Temple extends beyond its magnificent idol to its extraordinary location, encompassed by water on three sides. Centuries later, the esteemed philosopher and theologian, Adi Shankara, introduced a structured framework for the temple’s daily worship, prescribing specific offerings to be presented to the divine deity.
She is worshipped in different forms throughout the day. In the morning, she is worshipped as Saraswathy, the embodiment of knowledge and wisdom. At Noon as Sri Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. And in the evening she is worshipped as Durga Devi, the fierce and protective warrior goddess.
The devotees express their devotion and reverence through significant offerings presented to the goddess. The Naivilakku, a lamp kindled with pure ghee, symbolizes the illumination of one’s spiritual path. The application of kalabham, a fragrant sandal paste, represents the purity and sanctity of the worshipper’s intentions. Additionally, naipayasam, a delectable sweet preparation, is offered as a token of gratitude and devotion.

Emoor Bhagavathy Temple History
Once upon a time, in the midst of a dense forest that covered the entire area, Emoor Bhagavathy Temple held a unique legend, much like many other temples in Kerala. The temple was a sacred destination for the esteemed Kurur and Kaimukku Nambudiri families, who diligently paid their respects to the revered goddess.
As the years went by, the Nambudiri grew old and frail, making it increasingly challenging for him to undertake his daily visits to the temple. Sensing his devotion and longing, the goddess graciously appeared in his dream, promising to manifest herself near the pond adjacent to his dwelling. A profound sense of anticipation filled the air as the sun graced the horizon the following morning.
