Periya Avudayar Temple or Peru Udayar Temple is a 500 years old temple located on the banks of Shanmuga River 4 kms from Palani town, Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to Peria Auvudayar or Brahadeeshwarar the Lord of Universe and the idol is Swayambulinga. It is believed to have been there even before the time of sage Bogar. The gods Dakshinamurthy, Rudran, other deities and the 16 ancient inscriptions are the highlights of this temple. Additionally, Palani Devasthanam built a Kalyana mandapam near the temple for the devotees.

There is an undeclared rule in Palani that anyone who goes to visit Lord Murugan’s shrine must bathe in the waters of this river. It is believed that a person’s sins will be washed away if he bathes in Shanmuga River. Kavadi wearers usually bathe in this river before going to the temple. People also perform religious rites for ancestors and dead family members on the banks of this river. During the days of Grahamam and Amavasai, thousands of people take holy bath in the river.

The Peria Avudayar kovil is on the banks of this river. Periya Avudayar Koil is 3-4 kms away from the adivaram. One has to walk at least one k.m from the road to the temple. The temple is in a serene, sylvan and natural atmosphere. We can feel the pollution free air and hear the chirping of birds.

Busses are available from palani bus stand. You have to walk at least one kilometer from the road to the temple. Private taxi and autos are also available. The temple is located in a serene, jungle and natural environment. We can smell the pollution-free air and hear the chirping of birds.
