Bankey Bihari Temple

The twin city of Mathura and Vrindavan resound with the stories of Lord Krishna till date. Vrindavan is located 15 km from Mathura. Vrindavan city has more than 5000 temples all dedicated to Lord Krishna. This city got its name from sacred Tulsi commonly known as Vrinda. At one point of time, this place had vines of Tulsi groves so it was Vrindavan. Lord Krishna spent few years of his formative life in Vrindavan or Braj bhoomi. Vrindavan city has both ancient and modern temples.

There are many popular temples namely Radha Raman temple, Rangaji temple, Radha Vallabh temple, ISKCON temple. Yet, the most revered temple among them is the Banke Bihari temple. The temple was built by Swami Haridas in 1864. Folklore says that Swami Haridas discovered Banke Bihari in Nidhivan. Later, he moved Banke Bihari to the present temple premises. This temple is a special attraction during Sravana month. The temple and Banke Bihari are specially adorned and they look spectacular. The entire premises are covered with flowers and other decorative. Special puja is performed during Janmashtami. The idol of Shri Krishna is adorned with pitamber [yellow cloth] and jewellery. This temple is very popular amongst the devotees and Hindus.
