For the Hindus in Dakshina Kannada, the sacred place Kateel located at a distance of 29 K.M. from Mangalore city, is of great importance. Shree Durga Parameshwari temple of Kateel is situated in the middle of the sacred river in the background of scenic beauty and captivating greeneries. The scene of flowing water in the river embracing around the lower layer of the temple creates overwhelming emotions in the minds of devotees. On entering through the main entrance, there is a big symbolic rock on the left side, which is known as Goddess Rakteshwari. Puja is performed to Goddess Rakteshwari every day and devotees offer coconut to the Goddess on every Sankramana. There is also a shrine dedicated to Goddess Chamundi, a form of Goddess Durga.
All devotees and visitors of the temple are served free meals at noon and night every day. Devotees eat these meals with deep devotion and they consider it as a blessing of Goddess Shree Durga Parameshwari. The Goddess is fond of dance and music, and hence there is a team of artists committed exclusively to performing the cultural activity of a folk play Yakshagana, portraying the miraculous power and grace of the Goddess.
