Dhandayuthapani Temple History:
Protesting against Lord Shiva’s decision on the Mango issue to favor Lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga left his parents and settled in Palani. On the way to Palani, He relaxed here with his Vahan peacock. Later, a devotee addressing Palani also relaxed here when a voice said “I am here as Dandayuthapani”. The devotee did not understand the voice and addressed Palani. Lord Shanmuga came to see him as a devotee, gave this devotee a begging bowl and asked him to build a temple there. With the money collected by the bowl, he built this temple here.
As Lord Muruga was angry with the mango problem, this fruit is offered here as Nivedhana to the Lord. It is also believed that Muruga’s grace made Salem famous for producing mangoes. Devotees praise the Lord as Mambazha Murugan. Mango-Mambazham in Tamil.
