Perur Sri Patteeswarar Swamy Temple Timings, History

Perur Pateeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva Temple located on the bank of the Noyyal River at Perur, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The temple was built by Karikala Chola in the 2nd century CE. Here the presiding deity is Patteeswarar with his consort Parvati, worshipped as Pachainayaki and is believed Swayambu Lingam. This temple has several gopurams and halls, among which stands out ‘Kanaka Sabha’, the one with the golden statue of Nataraja. The ceiling is covered with a network of stone chains and the pillars are decorated with sculptures of Shiva in his various forms.

There is a Patti Vinayagar shrine, dedicated to Sri Ganesha. The Arasambalavanar shrine is dedicated to Shiva at the place where Shiva is said to have performed his Thandav under a peepul tree. Gajasamhara, Virabhadra, Bikshadana, Oordhva Thandava, Goddess Saraswati along with Veena statues are also seen inside the temple. The sacred trees associated with the temple are palm and tamarind, called Irava Panai and Pirava Puli.

Different names have been used for this temple over the years, they are Kamadenupuri, Pattipuri, Adhipuri, Daksha Kailasham, Thavasiddhapuram, Gnanapuram, Kalyanapuram, Pirava Neri Thalam, Pasupathipuram, and Melai Chidambaram.

Nataraja Swamy usually appears in all temples in an active dancing posture. The difference in this temple is that he appears with its legs down indicating the end of the performance. He looks a bit naughty. With bright cheeks and flowing hair, the appearance is very pleasing to the eyes of the devotee. It is here at Kanaka Sabha that the god Siva granted his Ananda Thandavam darshan to Sri Brahmma and Sri Maha Vishnu, Mother Kali and Saint Sundarar. As this is a salvation centre, Bhairava appears without his Dog Vahan as Gnana Bhairava. Sri Anjaneya is made of wood and Sri Muruga is in between the shrines of Lord and Mother in the Somaskanda form.

Perur Patteeswarar Temple History:

The divine cow Kamadenu performed severe penance on God Shiva seeking the position of Sri Brahmma to take over the Creation work. It was pouring its milk on the Shivalinga here hidden in an anthill. Her baby Patti, in a playful mood, hit the anthill and was demolished. Shocked, Kamadenu fell at the feet of the God Shiva and asked for his forgiveness. Appearing before the divine cow, the shiva said that he was pleased only with the calf. God Siva further said that the place was the first among the sthalas of salvation for his devotees and that he would bestow the blessing of creation on Kamadenu at Tirukaruhavur and advised it to do penance there. God Shiva mercifully said that this place would be praised as Kamadenupuram and Pattipuri by the name of the calf and he would stay at the place as Patteeswarar.
